I started playing the Hero Games system back in the early 1980s when a friend of mine let me borrow his 1st edition Champions rule book.
At the time, I thought that the system was revolutionary... using points to create characters rather than die rolls seemed so wonderfully balanced and democratic. One character would not be, by pure luck, more capable than another in every aspect, the way it often was with other systems.
Since that time I've run a lot of campaigns in the system, from Fantasy Hero to Robin Hood, and Danger Int'l, Justice, Inc., Robot Warriors, and, of course, Champions. I combined them, occasionally, too. I allowed my Danger, Int'l characters to learn spells and use magic items written up with the Fantasy Hero rules, and they loved it... it was a present-day techno-fantasy-kung-fu campaign, and it was a blast.
Oh, geez, look at me, getting all sentimental and nostalgic. I would kill for enough time in the week to get back into that stuff again.

Re: Hopped aboard this tribe for old times' sake
Mon, December 20, 2004 - 6:53 PMI remember much of the same.. I started right when 3rd edition came out. Though the guys I play with have been into it since 1st ed, and they still make bad calls about rules sometimes because of all their old memories! -

Re: Hopped aboard this tribe for old times' sake
Wed, March 16, 2005 - 2:14 PMI started with the 2nd Ed books just before 3rd edition came out. Still have all my 2nd ed and 3rd ed books somewhere.
I never really got to play in that many games (lack of other players) but i amused myself endlessly creating characters. Even wrote a spreadsheet that calc'd all the basic stats to speed things up.
I used to make the players have a battle cry. My favorite?
"Sorry! I Can Pay For That!"
