Since then the rules have been through many editions, with Hero System 5th Edition being published in April of 2002 and a revised edition being released in December of 2004.

Although the RPG industry is dominated mostly by WotC (Dungeons and Dragons) and Collectible Card Games (Magic, etc...), Hero Games continues to put out quality gaming books and manages to maintain its business. There is definite room for growth, and in order to make that happen Hero gamers need to get out to their local game store or convention and teach people about the game. Not only does this increase our sales but in also increases the number of Hero gamers out there... and that's always a good thing.

I work for Hero Games primarily as the webmaster but I also handle retail order fulfilment, customer support as well as other office and writing duties. I love this company and love my coworkers who are all really good people. As a team we put out the best products possible so that gamers from all over can enjoy playing the Hero System.

I decided to do the opposite of what I usually do with these books, which is normally to just flip around, look at artwork, look at maps, look at weapons and equipment charts, and whatever, and instead start right from the intro and just read straight through.

So far, I'm enchanted. I'm enthralled. I want to run this game so badly it hurts. I will get to eventually, I'm sure. Right now I've just started a rip-roaring Terran Empires SH campaign that's well won the hearts and minds of its three hearty players, and I will heed Abraham Lincoln's advice not to switch horses midstream.

But seriously, Steve Long, if you're reading this, you really broke the mold with this work. College courses could be taught on the pulp genre using Pulp Hero as the textbook. Bravo. I can't wait to see the supplements to this sourcebook as they arrive.

At the time, I thought that the system was revolutionary... using points to create characters rather than die rolls seemed so wonderfully balanced and democratic. One character would not be, by pure luck, more capable than another in every aspect, the way it often was with other systems.

Since that time I've run a lot of campaigns in the system, from Fantasy Hero to Robin Hood, and Danger Int'l, Justice, Inc., Robot Warriors, and, of course, Champions. I combined them, occasionally, too. I allowed my Danger, Int'l characters to learn spells and use magic items written up with the Fantasy Hero rules, and they loved it... it was a present-day techno-fantasy-kung-fu campaign, and it was a blast.

Oh, geez, look at me, getting all sentimental and nostalgic. I would kill for enough time in the week to get back into that stuff again.

The Ultimate Mystic (DOJHERO108) ships this week and should arrive at your FLGS within the first week of the new year. This book was written by Dean Shomshak, the same writer who brought us The Mystic World (a supplement for Champions) and Arcane Adversaries (a villains book for Champions). It discusses how to run mystic based campaigns regardless of your chosen genre. A MUST HAVE for any Hero System gamemaster.
